Workban or GitHub Projects: which fits your team with AI agents?
GitHub Projects plans right on issues and pull requests, and on GitHub you can hand issues to coding agents like Copilot, Claude or Codex. Workban shows what people and agents are working on in their own terminal right now, without keeping issues up to date. Here is where they differ.

- Claude Code and Codex
- Updated October 30, 2026
In short
Close to the code or close to the session.
GitHub Projects builds on the issues and pull requests of your repositories, as a table, board or roadmap, with custom fields such as iterations. If you assign an issue to a coding agent, such as Copilot or, in a preview since February 2026, Claude and Codex, you get a session on GitHub that prepares a pull request.
Workban starts one step earlier: with the work developers do with Claude Code or Codex in their own terminal. The agent creates a task for it itself, the team sees live what every session is working on, and at the end the agent names the commit or the pull request. Code and reviews stay in GitHub.

The differences at a glance.

| Topic | Workban | GitHub Projects |
|---|---|---|
| Terms | Tasks, each in a project, such as a product or repository | Issues and pull requests, each in a repository; a project gathers them as a table, board or roadmap |
| Built for | Seeing who works on what, person or AI agent, with no upkeep | Planning on issues and pull requests, closely tied to the code |
| Who enters tasks | The agent itself while it works, or a person on the board | People, automations and workflows, through issues |
| AI agents | Claude Code and Codex on the developers' machines, through the CLI and hooks | Copilot as a coding agent; Claude and Codex in public preview, for Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business and Enterprise |
| Where the agent works | Locally in the terminal, together with you | In sessions on GitHub, with the result as a pull request |
| Time | Measured from status changes, waiting time excluded | Custom fields for dates and iterations |
| Subscription and AI cost | Your own subscription, such as Claude Max or ChatGPT Pro, no API key needed. Tokens and estimated cost per task from the session's log | Included in the Copilot subscription; during the preview, every Claude or Codex session uses one premium request |
| Views | One board with four fixed columns, statistics, dashboards for the office screen | Table, board and roadmap, saved views, up to 50 fields |
| Price | Free | Projects in the free plan too; coding agents with a Copilot subscription |
Workban
Why teams with AI agents choose Workban.
- Your developers work with Claude Code or Codex in the terminal, and not every task should become an issue first
- You want to see live which session is working on what, across all repositories on one board
- Time and AI cost per task and project should add up by themselves
- You want to work with the subscription you already have, such as Claude Max or ChatGPT Pro
- An agent should break a concept into tasks, and several sessions should build them at the same time, each visible on the board
- The board should run on the office screen, without a login
Both
GitHub for code and issues, Workban for the work in progress.
The two complement each other more than they replace each other. Code, pull requests and reviews stay in GitHub. Workban shows the work in between: which agent is on what right now, how long it takes and what it costs. When it closes the task, the agent names the commit or the pull request in its comment, so you get from the board to the code.
There is no sync with GitHub issues. The CLI reads the branch from Git and shows it on the task.
