Workban or Jira: which fits your team with AI agents?

Jira is the tool many companies use for planning, sprints and workflows, and it now also hands tasks to AI agents in the cloud. Workban has a narrower purpose: it shows what people and agents like Claude Code and Codex are working on right now, without anyone keeping tickets up to date. Here is where they differ.

  • Claude Code and Codex

In short

Two tools for two questions.

Jira answers what is planned and through which workflow it gets done: backlogs, sprints, custom fields and workflows, permissions per project. You can now assign work to an AI agent there, such as Claude, Codex or GitHub Copilot. Claude then works in Anthropic's cloud and delivers a draft pull request.

Workban answers who is working on what right now, person or agent, and what it cost. It is built for teams whose developers work with Claude Code or Codex in their own terminal. The agent creates its task there itself and closes it, and time and tokens come from the session.

Workban

Why teams with AI agents choose Workban.

  • Your developers work with Claude Code or Codex in the terminal, and nobody should log tickets after the fact
  • You want to see live which session is working on what, whether it is testing or waiting for an answer
  • Time and AI cost per task and project should add up by themselves, no stopwatch
  • You want to work with the subscription you already have, such as Claude Max or ChatGPT Pro
  • An agent should break a concept into tasks, and several sessions should build them at the same time, each visible on the board
  • The board should run on the office screen, without a login
  • You want nothing to set up and no workflows to maintain

Both

Jira for planning, Workban for the agents' work?

That works, but without a bridge: Workban has no Jira integration, and the tasks live apart. Some teams plan epics and dates in Jira and use Workban for the day when developers get the work done with their agents.

If you plan without sprints and story points, Workban is enough on its own: tasks and projects, time and AI cost in one place, and the agents keep it up to date themselves.

Questions

What people often ask.

Is Workban a Jira alternative?
Yes. You see live what people and agents are working on, and time and AI cost per task add up by themselves. Sprints, story points and custom workflows are left out of Workban on purpose, so there is nothing to maintain.
Can I bring tasks over from Jira?
Not automatically. There is no import and no sync. Workban's REST API lets a script create tasks.
What does Workban cost in comparison?
Workban is free, and you sign up without a card. You pay for AI as before, at Anthropic or OpenAI.
